Example Calculation

Add VAT Example

Suppose you have an original amount of £100 and want to add 20% VAT.

Calculation

Original Amount: £100

VAT Rate: 20%

VAT Amount

= £100 × 20%

= £20

Total Amount

= £100 + £20

= £120

Explanation

With a VAT rate of 20%, the VAT added to an original amount of £100 is £20, giving a total amount of £120.

Remove VAT Example

Suppose you have a VAT-inclusive amount of £120 and want to remove VAT at a rate of 20%.

Calculation

  • VAT-Inclusive Amount: £120

  • VAT Rate: 20%

Amount Before VAT

= £120 ÷ 1.20

= £100

VAT Amount

= £120 − £100

= £20

Explanation

A VAT-inclusive amount of £120 contains £20 VAT. After removing the VAT, the original amount before VAT is £100.

Calculation Formula

Add VAT

VAT Amount

= Amount × (VAT Rate ÷ 100)

Total Amount

= Amount + VAT Amount

Remove VAT

Amount Before VAT

= VAT-Inclusive Amount ÷ (1 + VAT Rate ÷ 100)

VAT Amount

= VAT-Inclusive Amount − Amount Before VAT

This example demonstrates how the VAT Calculator works using sample figures. Enter your own amount and VAT rate to quickly calculate VAT, add VAT to a price, or remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive amount.

Why these formulas are used

When adding VAT, the calculator first calculates the VAT amount based on the original amount and the VAT rate. It then adds the VAT amount to the original amount to produce the total amount.

When removing VAT, the calculator works backwards from the VAT-inclusive amount to determine the original amount before VAT was added. The VAT amount is then calculated as the difference between the VAT-inclusive amount and the original amount.

What Do These Results Mean?

VAT Amount – The amount of VAT calculated using the VAT rate you entered.

Total Amount – The final amount after VAT has been added to the original amount.
